Early life

Selina known as Pat was born in Notton, West Yorkshire in 1926. She had 3 older brothers and a sister. The family moved to Royston near Barnsley when she was aged 2. She was educated at the National School in Royston until the age of 11 and then Royston Senior Girls’ school until the age of 14. Sadly her father died when she was 12.
Pat went into domestic service first near Huddersfield and then near Halifax. After returning to Royston she became an usherette in the local cinema and then looked after the local doctor’s mother. Two weeks before her 18th birthday she volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force at Sheffield. Training was done at Wilmslow in Cheshire for one month and then Pat was posted to a Bomber Command Squadron in Pocklington, Yorkshire where Halifax bombers were stationed. She looked after the aircrews and had the sad task of packing up the belongings of aircrew who did not return, of which there were many.
When the war ended Pat had the opportunity to have a trip in one of the bombers to view Germany, or a local flight. As she was under 21 she needed her mother’s permission but this was not granted. As compensation she was allowed to have a photo taken in parachute kit with two of her friends. The aerodrome closed and she was posted to Full Sutton in Yorkshire to work with the Commanding Officer and then to Bircham Newton with the same Commanding Officer and family.
Pat was demobbed in 1947 and returned home until 1948 when she married her childhood sweetheart who had by then joined Bucks Constabulary. They had three children – Stephen, Ruth and Judith. After several moves with the police force the family moved to Eton Wick in 1965. Pat and her husband were divorced in 1971. Sadly Stephen died in 1996.
Pat is survived by her daughters Ruth and Judith, her four grandchildren, David, Andrew, Chris and Helen and her Great Granddaughter Pippa.
